This was super long week. Brad was out of town all week and I am exhausted from doing all the running by myself. With basketball practice and dance class and church and a doctor's and dentist's appointment, plus a visit to teach my homebound student, I don't feel like I have stopped since he left on Monday morning. I'm pooped! Just when I thought I wasn't going to make it to Friday, Brad srprised me by returning home a day early! Never been so glad to see him!
I had to take Sam to his very first orthodontist's appointment on Thursday. He was so nervous. For those of you who don't know, Sam has sucked the middle and ring finger on his right hand since he was about three months old. We bribed him a few months back with money and he actually stopped sucking them during the day. Now he only sucks them at night, which is a HUGE improvement from before. Still, he knew what the orthodontist was going to tell him. I think it kind of made it like a reality for him because he started to cry as soon as we walked out fo the office. He doesn't think he will be able to stop sucking his fingers. He is afraid he will not be able to go to sleep. Poor kid. He's really worried. The orthodontist suggested we buy a whole bunch of medical tape and tape his fingers each night with a wad of tape as big as a golfball so that he will not physically be able to put them in his mouth. I have found a finger guard online that I may order that straps on over your fingers and is attached to your wrist so you can't take it off easily. We know that there is the option of using that bad tasting stuff you paint on your fingers, but I really would rather not use that. Orthodontist said we could put in an appliance with a rake to make him stop sucking them, but that would be as a last resort. I would love to hear any suggestions anyone might have. He is sleeping on the couch right now with his fingers all bound with gauze and electrical tape (yeah, I haven't been to the store yet!). It took almost two hours longer than it usually does for him to go to sleep but he did. I am really hopeful that it won't be too bad.
So very glad it is Friday. Tomorrow I am going to clean my house and scrapbook a while.

don't buy the finger guard... it's a waste of money. the fingernail paint stuff is pretty good. i've used it with both carter & kensley. it got carter to stop biting his nails & we used it on kensley to keep her thumb out of her mouth while her fingernail grew back... however, she reverted to sucking the other thumb then. it tastes really bitter & it worked for a while until k got used to the taste. i say tape a sock on his hand at night or do the wad of tape. give it a week & he'll get used to the idea. fortunately carter stopped sucking his thumb on his own, so we really didn't have to battle that with him, but i know plenty of people who have. good luck!
I already ordered the finger guard. Tried taping things up for two nights and he has pulled it off both nights after whining for hours about not being able to aleep. We'll try it and see.
Poor Sam, I feel so bad for him! I need to try the bad tasting nail polish to try to get Lucas to stop biting his nails.
